Commissioned by the U.S. Navy in 1938 for long-range ocean patrol, it had a 61-meter wingspan, over 35 meters in length, and was powered by four Wright R-3350 engines producing 10,000 horsepower. With a maximum takeoff weight of 74.8 tons, it could fly more than 5,300 kilometers. Its cabin carried 133 fully armed troops, 15 tons of cargo, or seven Willys jeeps.
