Britain's war in the air was fought by the Army's Royal Flying Corps and Navy's Royal Naval Air Service, in April 1918 they merged to form the Royal Air Force, by that time the worlds most powerful air force. The price of victory was a high one, for new pilots the average lifespan on frontline service was 2 weeks! Their names can be read on every public school and university honours
