There was a BELUGA WHALE spotted in San Diego waters over the weekend! This is the first time a beluga has been documented anywhere near California, as it is over 6,000 miles from its regular home. The furthest south a Beluga Whale has ever been documented on the west coast of the US is Washington state in 1940! They can handle the water temperature, as they have belugas with SPAWARS (US Navy facility) in San Diego in which they take occasionally to Hawaii. But in the wild? Woah! Incredible foot

Did you know beluga whales 'talk' to one another? By having beluga whales in our care, we can learn from them and conduct valuable research that impacts their ocean counterparts. In collaboration with Stephen F. Austin State University, researchers placed a hydrophone in our beluga habitat to record the varieties of vocals our belugas make to analyze them for further understanding of what they may mean and how belugas are communicating. This research will not only help us better understand belug

Enchanting beluga whales in the Svalbard Islands, Norway. These highly social toothed whales travel in relatively big pods, switching between different groups on a regular basis. Males typically prefer traveling together, and females normally stick with other females and their children. Beluga whales are entirely arctic and subarctic. In summer they reside in bays, estuaries and inlets, and in winter occur offshore and in association with pack ice! They can also swim backwards! ♡ Video by Evelin

Baby narlugas might be coming! A stray narwhal has been adopted by a pod of male beluga whales, and he’s become “one of the boys.” 🐳 They’ve now reached maturity and will be looking for a female pod of beluga whales to mate with, which means we may see a baby narluga in St. Lawrence River. 🐋 Narlugas are real, with the existence of one officially confirmed in 2019 after Inuit hunters discovered one. 🌊 📸 Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals (GREMM) #belugawhale #narwhal #whalesi
