Tens of thousands of centuries-old books are being pulled from the shelves of a medieval abbey in Hungary in an effort to save them from a beetle infestation that could wipe out centuries of history.

Beetles have infiltrated a 1,000-year-old library in Hungary, jeopardizing tens of thousands of centuries-old books. The beetles are called drugstore beetles or bread beetles. The library is tentatively scheduled to be reopened next year. Tens of thousands of centuries-old books are in jeopardy of being destroyed due to a beetle infestation.

Founded in 996, the abbey is located on a hill in northwest Hungary. It houses the country’s oldest book collection and some of its earliest written records.
