The boy, who has not been named, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possessing illegal weapons. The officer who died early Saturday morning was identified as Detective Joseph Azcona.

A 14-year-old suspect was taken into custody on murder charges following a shootout with Newark police officers Friday evening that left one dead and a second hospitalized, police and county officials said.

Joseph Azcona, 26, of Newark, was one of two city police officers shot at 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret Street in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
