Nearly every barcode scanner I've run across is effectively a keyboard. I'd give it a try with one of the commonly available ones; worst case you can always return it.

Say what you will about suitcase computers, but at least most of them still have their keyboards with them. [danjovic] has this vintage Brazilian computer from the 1980s called a Gradiente Expert.
