TDOC called off the execution of Tony Carruthers after repeated attempts to find a vein for lethal injection failed.

Gov. Bill Lee granted a one-year reprieve Thursday after Tennessee halted the execution of Tony Carruthers amid problems establishing IV access.

Attorneys for Tony Carruthers, who was scheduled to be executed Thursday morning in Tennessee, have filed an emergency stay of execution, claiming corrections has been unable to set an IV line to administer lethal injection drugs.

Rainwater pooled along the pavement outside Florida State Prison as the state executed Richard Knight at 6:13 p.m. Thursday for the double murder of a mother and daughter.

The staff attempted to locate a proper vein for 1.5 hours before the execution was aborted, and Carruthers was returned to a cell at the prison.
