Shane Bieber struck out nine over six innings of one-run ball in his Toronto debut and return from a 16-month absence as the Blue Jays beat the Miami Marlins 5-2.
Toronto, which leads Major League Baseball in batting average, gave Bieber breathing room early. A three-run first inning set the tone, with RBI hits from Daulton Varsho and Ty France. Varsho later added a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 5–1, his 14th of the season.
With the exception of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios has logged more than 145 innings for eight consecutive years, including this season.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed that Shane Bieber will make his first start in nearly 17 months on Friday.
