The Powerball jackpot skyrocketed to a whopping $1.1 billion after no one claimed the $1 billion prize in Saturday evening’s drawing.
Mega Millions followed a similar path. Its first jackpot winner in 2002 took home $28 million. Its record prize — a $1.602 billion jackpot won on Aug. 8, 2023 — ranks as the fourth-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The estimated Powerball jackpot has reached $1 billion, with a cash value of $461.3 million, for Saturday’s drawing, according to the New York Lottery website. The entry period will close at 10 p.m. on Saturday, and the drawing will take place at 10:59 p.m., the website said.
Powerball has grown to an estimated $1.1 billion after no ticket matched all 6 numbers in the last drawing. Dec. 15 draw is close to Hanukkah holiday.
There was no winner in Saturday night's drawing, with the next one scheduled for Monday. The current jackpot is Powerball's sixth-largest prize ever. CBS News New York's Allen Devlin reports.
