There were more than 106,000 federal employees in New York’s major metro areas as of December, the most recent month for which data is available from the state Labor Department. That’s about 1.2% of the total nonfarm payroll in those areas. Nonfarm payroll includes both private employers and government agencies, but not the military.

When President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address on Capitol Hill Tuesday night, he’ll see some workers in the audience who just lost their jobs because of him. Several Democratic lawmakers have said they plan to bring fired federal employees as their guests to the Capitol for Trump’s address.

The move comes as lawmakers hear from constituents over President Trump’s and Elon Musk’s efforts to slash federal spending and cull the civil service ranks.
