49ers plan to bring QB back just days after releasing him
While the 49ers waived Martinez to make room for defensive end Clelin Ferrell, they're not planning on Martinez being gone long according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan on Monday in a conference call said Martinez was an option to return to the practice squad. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport later reported Martinez would be rejoining the 49ers.
San Francisco quarterback Mac Jones explained his decision to give Adrian Martinez the final snap in the 49ers' win Sunday over the New York Giants.
Martinez's services on the 49ers' active roster are no longer needed as Mac Jones will revert to a backup role for Sunday's game against the Cardinals due to the return of Brock Purdy (toe). Martinez could be brought back by San Francisco on the practice squad, assuming he clears waivers.
Brock Purdy is back, and the team juggled its roster accordingly--including waiving their reserve quarterback.
Kyle Shanahan said Brock Purdy "checked out all right" after his first game back. Linebacker Tatum Bethune, however, didn't fare as well.
